Getting started with Kreon laser scanning on Aberlink CMMs: Setup, Applications & Calibration Walkthrough

This introductory session covers the essentials of the Kreon laser system, starting with an overview of the current hardware setup, including the Renishaw controller. We look at the applications where a laser scanner is the right choice over touch probing, and discuss when a CNC CMM is the better platform for laser scanning compared to a portable arm.

From there, we move into hands-on setup: performing basic probing calibration in UCC Server, followed by laser calibration in PolyWorks Inspector. By the end of this video, you'll have a solid foundation in the system architecture, application fit, and calibration steps needed before moving on to scanning workflows.

Touch Probe vs Laser Scan: Kreon Zephyr III Accuracy Comparison on a CNC CMM

How closely does laser scan data really match tactile probing?
In this short comparison, we measure the same flat face on a component two ways on our Axiom too CNC CMM.
First with a tactile touch probe, then with the Kreon Zephyr III laser scanner, and line the results up side by side.

What's compared:

Touch probing: over 150 discrete points captured across the face
Laser scanning: the same face captured with the Kreon Zephyr III, taking over 3.5 million points in a fraction of the time
Result: the laser data ties in extremely closely with the tactile results, at a fraction of the cycle time and orders of magnitude more data

It's a simple demonstration, but a striking one: near-identical accuracy to touch probing, with vastly more surface coverage and much faster cycle times.

Fulcrum - Cross Section Scanning [Sectional Projection] | DXF Comparison

Measuring cross sections of turned components has always been a difficult if not impossible task on a manual machine. Not anymore!

Aberlink3D has an innovative solution to allow easy measurement of any cross sections on your components. Simply scan the section as a curve, and the software can then project the points via the centre circle.

This is referred to as a sectional projection allowing the measurements to then be taken as if the probe was perfectly on the centre line of the component.

Datum Located Features

Feature templates are typically defined by the program reference system.
However, the 'Datum Located Features' function allows templates to be defined by datums/ datum frames.

This gives much more flexability and precision for features that are not linked to the initial reference system, or are done in different operations. Rather than having multiple reference systems, which can often get confusing, 'Datum Located Features' keeps the same original alignment in a single inspection, but gives operators the power to link measurement features to datum frames within the program.
